Scripture: II Cor.3:15-4:1,3-6. Psalm 85. Matthew 5:20-26. Lectionary #
362.
For Christians, Jesus is the human face of God. We are to see Jesus' face
in one another for all are made in the image and likeness of God and God
"saw what God made was good." We are told by Paul today that we all share
in the glory of God and when we do we become fully alive as St.Irenaeus
says in his writings. Paul is preaching through his faith convictions and
we learn much about him through the collection of writings which we call II
Corinthians. He proclaims, "And all of us, with unveiled faces, seeing the
glory of the Lord as though reflected in a mirror, are being transformed
into the same image from one degree of glory to another; for this comes
from the Lord, the Spirit." We have learned from Paul that we can only say
that Jesus is Lord through the Holy Spirit. Paul ends today's little
passage with the words, ..."the face of Jesus Christ." Our Gospel
acclamation helps us to remember how we can be more like Christ which
enables us then to see his face in one another: "I give you a new
commandment: love one another as I have loved you." Thus when we do need
renewing and refreshing our vision of Christ we can do so by following
through on the beautiful passage of reconciliation given at the end of
today's Gospel passage which is found in the Sermon on the Mount. We then
have our vision restored to perfection. Our gift of self is then ready to
be offered on the altar of God for we are one with our neighbor. "If you
remember that your brother or sister has something against you, leave your
gift there before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother or
sister, and then come offer your gift."
