Lectionary # 459. Friday, Oct. 2,2008 Scripture reflection

Scripture: Friday of 26th week. Job 38:1.12-21. Psalm
139:1-3.7-8.9-10.13-14. Luke 10:13-16. Lectionary # 459:

"He who hears you, hears me!" (Luke 10:16). Jesus is entrusting us
with his mission by these words. We continue the journey with him and he
teaches us each step of the way how to be his disciples. This is quite a
challenge. However, isn't listening to Jesus a rather important part of our
spiritual and apostolic life? Listening is a self imposed advantage for us
and it doesn't hurt. We tend to talk too much and our listening powers are
atuned to the cacophony of a noisey environment-- almost a rap like one.
Listening to Jesus today we hear him warning his own people who are in
Chorazin, Bethsaida, and Capernaum to turn back to God and convert--even
Tyre and Sidon, Nineveh have done better than they have. Then we hear him
telling us to be those who witness to him and carry out his mission. "He
who hears you, hears me." Yes, we need to listen carefully to him before
we can expect others to listen to us as disciples of Jesus.
Psalm 139 is a mystical prayer that shows us the depth of a soul
focused on God--one who has listened to God can pray in this manner. God
speaks within our inmost parts--our heart, mind, and soul. God knows and
loves everything within our hearts and minds. We only need to respond
quietly with a listening heart. Then we will hear the quiet whispers of
the Spirit within us. We then pray and are summoned to carry on the mission
of bringing Jesus to others as his Mother Mary did. She was and is a great
listener and knew how to pray.
Like Job we need to put our hands over our mouths in awe of God's
presence. We listen. Our Psalm can express what we feel when we truly
listen to God and we can say, "My journies and my rest you scrutinize; with
all my ways you are fimiliar. Amen.
